business ideas

I met with a friend this morning who told me she just signed up as a home-based consultant for a well-known multi-level-marketing company. I wish her all the best, but I know that kind of selling just isn't for me. I've been there, done that, and pretty much I made zero money out of selling some else's products.

However, I'm toying with the idea of starting an Etsy shop. I like crochet, making toys and other crafts, as well as useful things like headbands, potholders, washcloths, etc. I spend a lot of time on it, and it's a really fun hobby. Others have turned it into a business, so why can't I? I even went so far as to pick out a shop name.... but didn't fill in any of the other details yet. I'll need to build up my stash of finished craft projects first, and take some more pictures, before I'm really ready to sell. But stay tuned! You might see my Etsy shop "grand opening" in a few months.

If any of you out there have some tips for selling online/starting your own business, please share them in your comments. I'd love to hear from you :)

Celebrate! Free crochet pattern: princess headband

My newest hobby is crochet. I started learning to crochet at the end of December, about 6 months ago. I taught myself the basic stitches by watching YouTube videos, believe it or not. My daughter started practicing too, and she can do a really great chain stitch :) She sometimes manages to make things like bookmarks and bracelets.

Today we were celebrating the birthday of one of her dear friends. I love giving handmade gifts, but I had this particular friend with me most of the week, and didn't have to time to create or buy anything without her seeing it. I checked around a little bit on my favorite crochet site, www.ravelry.com, but didn't see anything particularly fast and easy. So I made up my own pattern. (Isn't that usually why patterns are made up?)

Here's the cupcake decorating station.
Her mom made special gluten-free cupcakes.

And here are the kids' party favors: They got to decorate their own flip flops! They turned out really cute!

And here's is my Princess Headband pattern, free for your personal use and enjoyment.
Use any ww yarn and size G hook. This size fits teens-adults.
Adjust the beginning chain length, if needed, for a different size, such as for a smaller child.

Terms used:
ss - slip stitch
sc- single crochet
sk- skip a stitch
dc- double crochet
trc- triple crochet
dc4tog- double crochet 4 stitches together. Do this as if you were decreasing by one stitch, but instead of one, pick up 4 dc stitches. Yarn over, and pull through all stitches on your hook. There, you've done it. It's not hard, it just looks a little odd at first.

R1: ch93.  turn.
R2: Beginning in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 30 sts. ch2, sk2, 5dc in next st. (sk3, 5dc) repeat six times. Then ch2, sk2, sc. Turn.
R3: ch5, sc in 2nd dc, dc4tog. (ch2, sk3, dc4tog) rep. 6 times. TRC in 1st ch. of previous row. Turn.
R4: (ch5, sk3, sc) rep. 3 times. Then ch12, sk3, sc. Again, (ch5, sk3, sc) 3 times. (Note: You will sc into the first "ch5" of the previous row, Row 3. Hope that helps.) Continue by ss into the next 6 sts. sc in ea. st across. ss to join, making sure your chain isn't twisted. Fasten off, weave in ends. All done! :)

Total working time: 10-15 minutes.
This is a sweet little headband for dress-up, birthdays, a quick "get-better-soon" gift, or "just because." You could also add small beads or use metallic thread for some extra glitter and sparkle. Have fun. Happy crocheting...

NOTE--
+Please keep in mind that although this is a free pattern, I would appreciate if you didn't sell the pattern OR the finished product. If you like it and want to use it, that's great! But please give me credit if you do. A linkback or a comment would be much appreciated. Thanks.+

Chubby Bunny eats baby food.

This week Aliah began to eat baby food.

Which do you think she likes better: baby cereal, or her own toes?!

Aliah just ate 5 oz. of baby cereal, in addition to her regular liquid meal.

That's a huge dinner! I didn't think her tiny tummy could hold so much food!

She's getting so big; I can't wait to see how much she's grown at her six-month check-up.

Last night I hosted a Father's day craft night for all of our little MOPS friends. It was fun, they all made gifts for their daddies/grandpas, PLUS it gave the other moms a break from their kids for an hour or two, AND Mike got to sit at home in a very quiet house until 8:30pm! Bonus, good times all around.

random things

Eleven days ago, Baby Amber went to Heaven.
She was going to be five months old today.
I sent her parents another card this morning, just to let them know that I'm still thinking of them and praying for them.

In other news...

Today was Day 3 of Aliah eating baby cereal. She makes squealing noises, chews on the spoon, and sucks the food into her mouth. She's becoming really good at sitting up on her own. Hannah's new favorite things to do with her baby sister are taking a bath together and playing peekaboo.

Our exciting event of the day was going to our new local Walmart's grand opening. It really wasn't so special, and I spent more money than I should have for the week.

We're babysitting for eight hours tomorrow and it's gearing up to be a very long, tiring, HOT day.

On Friday I am hosting a MOPS craft night so that the kids can make some Father's Day gifts.

I just discovered the site wishuponahero.com and it seems like a neat way to help people who really need it!

31 weeks.

At 31 weeks pregnant, I have gained about 25 lbs total. Im really happy with that - especially since my diet has not been so good lately, with all the vacations we've been taking. I am hoping to keep it around 30-35 lbs altogether, so that means I'm still on target. My bp is still amazingly low, which is WONDERFUL news, especially with my history of pre-eclampsia. Everything is going great! Im just so thankful for our good health!

Had another ultrasound on Wednesday, and it was amazing! Saw & Heard the heartbeat (which has been a steady 150 bpm throughout the pregnancy). Even got some great head/face/profile shots, in 3d! And our New Baby has hair - peach-fuzz kind of hair, but still, I saw it! The u/s tech was really nice. She said "Believe me, not all babies are this cute and cooperative!" Baby is measuring 1.5-2 weeks bigger than average. At 31 weeks s/he is 4.5 lbs already! :) So, this one will certainly be bigger than Hannah, but Im sure I can handle it.

Everyone is convinced that this baby is a boy, but we still don't know the gender. Hannah still wants a baby sister. But we just don't know yet. It's our Christmas surprise :) Funny, it seems like everyone we know is having boy babies right now. Is this some sort of bizzare 2008-09 trend?

I wish our scanner was working, so I could share some pics. I don't know why it's not working! Everytime I plug it in, I get a weird error message. Oh well. One of these days I'll get around to copying all the ultrasound pictures.

Last night I hosted a Craft Night at church. It was just me and Melissa and Hannah who showed up, but we still had fun. I completed the first four pages of my pregnancy scrapbook. Now I need to print hundreds more pictures of our beach trip, and our family trip last week, and some belly shots of me for the other pages.

This morning I attended the southern MOPS group, and helped make crafts for a Christmas fundraiser they are doing next month. It was nice to see all those moms again. I feel like I need more of a social life, outside of Hannah and our babysitting/playdates. It makes me sad that so many of my friends live far away...!

Silly Hannah moments. More pictures.

More activities coming up very soon. I'll be babysitting a few more hours a week, starting now, since The Mom is actually teaching her college class again.
We are getting ready for MOPS and AWANA to start next week.

Plus we're really looking forward to our beach vacation, which begins Sept 21st! Mike is counting down the days.... Poor guy, he's been sleeping terribly, and having lots of stress/busyness at work. I felt proud that I made him dinner tonight, from stratch, (ncluding dessert! how rare!) and had it all ready when he got home at 7pm. We almost never get to eat meals at the same time, so it was really nice to do that today.

Today Hannah and I looked at pictures from our OBX trip in Feb 2007, which she doesnt remember, but it was neat to show her that area. She is excited to visit Jockey's Ridge (she says "Jockey Bridge" instead), and she also called it Sand Mountain, which was very cute.

It seems like Hannah never stops moving these days. Even while eating, she's kicking her feet, twisting in her chair, clapping hands, singing ABC's, and running over to tend to her "crying" baby doll. It drives me crazy, though I try not to get frustrated.

Hannah has been having a blast hearing her name on the news lately. Every time she hears anyone say "Hurricane" or "Tropical Storm Hanna", she instantly perks up. She thinks its hilarious that news reporters and weathermen are mentioning "her." Hah.

Another funny Hannah moment that I have to share: While grocery shopping on Thursday, Hannah asked me about the baby in my belly, then pointed to her father and asked, as loudly as she could in her sweet little voice: "Daddy, do you have a baby growing in your BIG TUMMY, too?"
Poor Mike was totally embarrassed!
But it WAS funny.

PICTURES! :)

Nicole's Pregnant Belly: 24 weeks
Not the greatest angle. And why is it that women always, somehow, look bigger than they truly are in a bathing suit?!

Silly Hannah, relaxing at my parents house

Hannah and my dad playing around, the day after he got home from the hospital.
He really is no different than before - and we are so thankful!

I havent uploaded any new pictures from September yet. Actually, I dont know if Ive TAKEN any pictures since we've been to Maryland! Hmmm, I'll have to work on that. I've been seriously slacking with my photos. I havent even gotten any scrapbooking done in at least a month. But Hannah sure has been making more crafts lately (it's about the only constructive thing I can get her to do during these rain days). Today she strung together enough beads to make necklaces for her entire Sunday School class. We actually ran out of beads, and had string left over!! That never happens.

Im slowly making Hannah's bedtime a little earlier, because she doesnt seem to be getting quite enough sleep. She always wakes up before I do in the mornings, and is super-tired by mid-afternoon, though she won't take naps. Tonight it was lights-out at 9:20 instead of 9:30. We'll see if that helps. Maybe I just need to be more firm about instituting "quiet times" for her in the afternoons, I don't know.

Iron-on shirt.

Im 13 weeks pregnant! Did I already say that?
Is that usually considered the 2nd trimester, or not quite yet?
I dont remember exactly how the days are broken down.

I read the other day that my baby is about 2.5-3 inches long, and weighs about half an ounce. That seems SO TINY! Hannah has been asking often if she can see the baby in my tummy. I keep saying "not yet, the baby has to grow more."

This morning, the five year old that I babysit walked up to me with a baby doll and asked if it was the same size as a newborn. Well, almost! It was a good guess.
We babysat from 9-5 today, and the kids really wore me out. The girls didnt want to stop running, all afternoon!

I made this adorable shirt for Hannah last night. Here is the front:

And this is the back:

I hope it's not too big for her. We're gonna take it on vacation with us, and I can't wait for her to wear it and tell everyone all about it!!!

Tonight is Mike's last night shift for the month, then he has the weekend off! YAY!
Then after next week, he has TWO WEEKS off! That's even better! ;)

Im excited about tomorrow night: two interrupted hours of SCRAPBOOKING! Maybe I'll finally be able to get through Christmas 2007, and move on to 2008!

Have a good weekend.

It's raining, it's pouring... and Hannah is snoring.

I almost bought myself a miscarriage/pregnancy loss bracelet from http://www.labelledame.com/miscarriage-infant-loss.html for Mother's Day... but ended up not ordering it. They have some really touching, beautiful things. Instead, I used some of the designs to inspire my own creation! These are the first pieces of jewelry that I have ever made, and I am SO EXCITED and happy at the way they turned out! :) I put a colored birthstone next to each flower, representing the months that I lost my three angel babies. And the matching earrings are just perfect! You can't get those at a store!

Look what I made last night!

I just wanted to share this, because the whole jewelry-making process was a very healing and beautiful experience for me. Now I am working on two similar bracelet/earring sets, that I plan to give to my mom and MIL for their birthdays later this summer, as a thank-you gift for supporting me through one of the most difficult years of my life.

This morning was the first time I got to wear my new bracelet/earrings. And during church, I felt such a peace and calm from the Holy Spirit! I was on the verge of tears all morning. It really was amazing; I don't know how to explain it. The message today was about being missionaries and servants of God, and I just felt so moved and encouraged. I know that God is working through me, to be a "missionary" right here in NC, just where I am.

After church, Hannah & I ate lunch, and took a verrrry long walk around the neigborhood - she walked/rode her bike for over an hour! Then she came home and crashed.

I'm glad we got some exercise, kuz it's pouring down rain now!

The thunder and lightening are getting closer, so I'm gonna shut down the computer, just to be safe. We've already had one hard drive crash this week. I don't want to deal with that again.

Hope you had a nice weekend.

Week in review

I feel like ever since Mike & Hannah got home on Wednesday night, we've been constantly on-the-go.
On Thursday, I babysat 3 preschoolers for eight hours, and they wore me out! Actually, it was so warm that day that I let them run through the sprinkler! They each began the afternoon wearing bathing suits, but within an hour or two, they were butt-naked and covered in mud. At least they had fun.... I just tried to manage the chaos. I was able to clean them up well enough so that their mom didn't even realize that they had been rolling around in the mud like pigs! haha. Whew, I was so thankful that they didn't track mud and dirt all through the house, either. That would have been a nightmare to clean up.
On Friday we went to MOPs, did more babysitting, and Hannah had dance class. Since her trip to PA, she's been going to bed later and waking up earlier - so at 4:30 when the class was ending, she was too tired to participate anymore. I was watching through the large glass window, and I felt kind of sorry for her. She looked really pathetic, standing in the middle of the room, wearing her ballet outfit and rubbing her eyes, just watching the other girls dance around her.
I think she fell asleep on the way home. (but, of course, only for ten minutes, because whenever the car stops, she always wakes up.) I don't even remember what we ate for dinner last night, that's how tired I was. I've been incredibly exhausted this week too - but that isn't new.

Today, we had a really fun day. This morning, our MOPs group hosted their annual Easter egg hunt. Their pastor used the resurrection eggs to tell the Easter story in a way that the young children could understand. Then it was mass chaos as 50+ children between the ages of eight and one ran as fast as they could to find the hidden eggs. Hannah was very picky about which eggs she could pick up - she wanted them all to be pink or purple, and after those colors were gone, she would only allow one egg blue egg, one green, and one orange egg to go in her basket. She's so peculiar sometimes.

After filling ourselves with sugar, we stopped to eat lunch, then went shopping. The craft stores in our area were each doing new product demonstrations, so we stopped at 3 different stores and made all kinds of fun, free crafts! I also got a new set of scrapbooking markers for 50% off; I'd been eyeing them for a few weeks, but if you know me, I refuse to pay full price for just about anything.
Hannah insisted on getting a headband wih fuzzy pink-and-purple bunny ears. They were $1, and she carried them all around the store with her, talking about how badly she wanted to wear them. As soon as we paid for them, I took the headband out of the pacage and told her she could wear it now. And you know what she said to me? "No Mommy, I don't want to wear it now." Silly girl! So I wore those bunny ears for the rest of the afternoon. Surprisingly, no one said anything about them.
I also found a store that wil fix Hannah's purple crocs for free! It's called Learning Express, and they have all kinds of unique, fun, educational toys! I'm definitely going back there next time I need a birthday party present!

By the time we got home, it was after 3pm - and we BOTH took a nap!

Ok, it's just about my bedtime now.
Goodnight.
